Rating: ★★★★½

When I first heard about this book, I knew I would want to read it. A post-apocalyptic world WITH vampires? Heck yes! I’d read Kagawa’s The Iron King previously, so I was familiar with her writing style. Where in that series, I found Meghan to get a little whiny and annoying at times, in The Immortal Rules Allison is the exact opposite. Allie has had to fend for herself as an Unregistered human in a vampire city, which seems something like being an illegal immigrant. She and her friends have to stay under the radar, or become Registered and have to give blood to the vampires. The book starts off seeing Allison’s everyday struggles, but everything changes when she and her friends are attacked by “rabids”. I found myself picturing them much like the infected in 28 Days Later, kind of a vampire-zombie hybrid. Needless to say, they’re scary. Allie is fatally wounded, and given two choices: succumb to her injuries and die, or become what she hates—a vampire—and continue to exist. The rest of the book follows her as she deals with what she has become. Learning how to survive is easy, the hard part is learning how she can continue to be who she is. The Immortal Rules is the fantastic introduction to Julie Kagawa’s new Blood of Eden series. I would recommend it to anyone who likes vampire books, post-apocalyptic and dystopian books, and anyone who likes kick-ass heroines! I can’t wait until the next book!

Happy reading, and good eating!
